In response to an invitation from the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, will visit the country from the 13th -16th June.
This is Ms. Bachelet’s first visit to Ecuador as the Executive Director of UN Women. Her trip confirms UN Women’s commitment to continue supporting the country’s efforts to achieve gender equality, promoting women’s empowerment and women’s rights.
Michelle Bachelet will hold meetings with the President, Rafael Correa, as well as with other senior officials at the national and local levels, and with civil society representatives. The meetings will focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ecuador, the achievements so far and the challenges that need to be addressed.
During the visit and in recognition of the fundamental role played by UN Women in promoting women’s rights worldwide, Quito’s Metropolitan District will honour Ms. Bachelet as an Honorary Citizen of Quito.
Ms. Bachelet will also sign an agreement between UN Women and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), and will visit Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls, one of the projects supported by UN Women in Quito.
After the visit to Ecuador, Ms. Bachelet will travel to Brazil to attend the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development: Rio +20, from the 19th – 21st of June.
