From 13-14 December, UN Women hosted a forum in New York to engage a range of stakeholders in preparation for the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW57), which focuses on the “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.”
The Stakeholders’ Forum aimed to foster dialogue, build alliances and raise awareness of existing commitments and standards for ending violence against women. It provided a platform for sharing ideas and strategies that work and bring results, and identify key areas and issues where consensus is needed.
On Thursday 13 December, a Survivors’ Forum panel discussion brought together five women who are survivors of violence and who have brought long-term change in their communities, to discuss how they have used their experience to successfully promote legislative and policy reforms to end violence against women. Also on Thursday, discussions focused on identifying best practices in tackling causes and risk factors to prevent violence, as well as on efforts to ensure inclusive policies and strategies to eliminate violence against all women and girls.
The Stakeholders’ Forum concluded on Friday 14 December with a panel on “Integrated service delivery and multi-sectoral responses and a closing discussion on key findings and commitments for the way forward. UN Women Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director Michelle Bachelet moderated the closing panel (read her concluding remarks).
In March 2013, the Commission will review experiences, lessons learned and best practices on ending violence against women. It will assess achievements and identify gaps and challenges, and enable world leaders to discuss ways to accelerate actions and commitments to tackle the pandemic. The Commission will adopt conclusions and action-oriented recommendations for Governments and relevant intergovernmental bodies including the United Nations system as well as other stakeholders, to advance effective ways to end violence against women and girls.
