UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri addresses the Gender and Youth Assemblies at the World Urban Forum, highlighting the surging numbers of youth around the world and the problems they face including economic, food, energy, gender inequality, environmental, urban living and security.
Since 2010, the UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality has worked to help amplify the voices of FIMI members in international decision-making spaces, as part of a programme to strengthen the advocacy networks and governance systems of indigenous women.
At a press conference on 18 June during The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro, Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, UN Women calls for women’s central role in achieving sustainability. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Former Prime Minister of Norway and Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Climate Change, joins the press conference.

UN Women works with 15 cooperatives in Rwanda’s Kirehe District to increase women farmers’ access to agricultural services. Trainings provided to co-op leaders have enabled them to think about the needs of women and men farmers and on expanding their membership, with a focus on women members. A testimony to their success is the sentiment expressed by many of the women members, about the life they can now provide for their children and the future.
On 2 February 2012, the Pakistan Senate unanimously approved the “National Commission on the Status of Women Bill 2012″ to protect women’s rights against every kind of discrimination. The new bill replaces the National Commission on the Status of Women Ordinance from 2000 and strengthens the Commission by giving it financial and administrative autonomy through an independent Secretariat.
