Rural women constitute one-fourth of the world’s population, and their contributions are vital to the well-being of communities, economies, and the achievement of all development goals. During the Commission on the Status of Women, UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet will call for robust policies to remove the barriers that prevent rural women from reaching their full potential and ensure their rights. She will also underline the need to expand their economic opportunities and political participation and leadership. Highlighting the contributions of rural women and the challenges they face, UN Women events during the meeting will also showcase innovative strategies that focus on empowering rural women worldwide.

You are cordially invited to an interactive luncheon co-hosted by the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the Government of Bangladesh and the Netherlands Mission to the United Nations. The discussion will be moderated by award-winning ABC News anchor Christiane Amanpour and will focus on the urgent need to empower rural women for food and nutrition security.

At a high-level event next week during the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, women political leaders will strongly call for increasing women’s political participation and decision-making across the world. Stressing that women’s participation is essential in all contexts — during peace, through conflict and post-conflict, and during political transitions — the leaders will sign on to a joint statement, as a call to action, with concrete recommendations on ways to advance women’s political participation.

Jointly organized by UN Women and the Government of Gabon, the conference on International Widows’ Day brings together a broad range of participants including representatives from diplomatic missions, UN Agencies, international organizations, foundations and the media. The main objective of the conference is to draw attention to the situation of widows around the world. But more importantly, the conference is intended to mobilize the international community, government decision makers and civil society to address the social climate that perpetuates discrimination against widows and explore how to provide opportunities for widows in their societies. The discussions of this conference will initiate dialogue through which to better understand the situation of widows worldwide and to develop support mechanisms and strategies that respond to the needs of widows.
