“I could not eat the remaining food that had been eaten by all of the family from the same big plate, so I survived on bread and black tea for 15 days,” recalls Maya Gurung, a Nepalese migrant worker, describing her first job as a domestic worker in Kuwait.
Cathy Eatock is an aboriginal woman and survivor of child sexual assault who pressed charges against her assailant despite resistance from her own community. She has since worked tirelessly on policies to protect women and children from abuse and defend the rights of indigenous peoples. She is now Senior Policy Officer for the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs of the Government of Australia.
The sound of helicopters still makes Soi Tonnampet shake, years later. It takes her back to the first time she and others from her indigenous community, the Karen, fled from an operation to clear areas of national parkland in Northern Thailand.
