Q&A with H.E Khawar Mumtaz, Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women, Pakistan

In light of Pakistan’s fourth periodic report to the CEDAW Committee in Geneva on 12 February, UN Women spoke to the recently appointed Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW). The new and autonomous Commission became part of the constitution on 8 March, 2012.

Asia-Pacific calls for urgent increase to low participation of women in politics

As leaders from Governments and civil society across the Asia-Pacific region met for a workshop in Beijing, China this week, they called for effective measures to increase the number of women in political decision-making at all levels.

UN Women signs agreement to better track female leadership and participation at the local level

As part of an MOU signed between UN Women and United Cities and Local Governments at a conference in Paris this week, both organizations will collect data on local female leadership, monitor local action plans on gender equality and create a global observatory.

Executive Director of UN Women Michelle Bachelet expresses deep concern over escalating violence against women in Egypt

UN Women is deeply disturbed by the gravity of recent attacks against women, including the reports of sexual assault, many of which occurred in the same Tahrir Square in which women rallied to contribute to a better future for their country.

Young Uruguayan women aim to boost their role in politics

In Uruguay, a 2009 law guarantees at least 30 per cent of candidates on electoral lists are women. To prepare for national elections next year, UN Women has been training a group of 25 young leaders from four political parties through tutorials.
