Salvation Army, New YorkOne of the flagship events of this year's CSW is the Youth Forum Advancing Agenda 2030 - Empowered Young Women and Young Men as Partners in Achieving Gender Equality. This two-day event will allow young people, women and men, to come together to amplify their voice, views and advocacy efforts in the implementation of Agenda 2030, in advance of the CSW60 official session. The Forum would constitute a space for young people, particularly young women and girls, to frankly and safely discuss the challenges they face and the concerns they have in their local, national, regional and global contexts with regard to the implementation of the Agenda 2030. As a critical output of the forum, a set of Youth Agreed Conclusions would be constituted, outlining a thorough analysis of the priority theme of CSW60. The Agreed Conclusions would be a set of recommendations for governments, inter-governmental organisations, civil society actors as well as other institutions and stakeholders on how to implement the Agenda 2030 responding to young people's needs.

On the eve of the inaugural meeting of the UN's High Level Panel on Women's Economic Empowerment, UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening invites you to join her to hear from young women on their experiences and on how business, civil society and development partners can help deliver transformative economic empowerment for women. The High Level Panel on Women's Economic Empowerment (HLP) was announced by the UN Secretary General in January. The panel aims to jumpstart a global movement on women's economic empowerment, following the agreement of Agenda 2030 in September 2015. At the centre of this is the effective transition of young women and girls from childhood and adolescence to rewarding adulthoods. Young women can face disproportionate challenges, but they also play critical role in achieving the Global Goals. That is why successful societies, with empowered women, empower their girls first. In recognition of this, Justine Greening would like to use this important opportunity to ensure that young voices are heard and engaged in the work of the HLP. The discussion will focus on the ambitions of the HLP and Agenda 2030, practical experiences of economic empowerment, and how to ensure that the HLP and the Global Goals are truly transformative for young women. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a pressing development problem across low-, middle-, and high-income countries. The presence of any form of VAWG undermines the achievement of sustainable development. In September 2015, UN Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and a set of 17 development goals. These development goals cannot be fully realized without first addressing the pervasive, global pandemic that is VAWG, a pandemic that has no social or economic boundaries. Global, local, and cross-cutting solutions are needed to ensure that VAWG is eliminated and the full set of social, economic, and sustainable development goals can be achieved. This session will highlight progress, potential effective interventions, and the various challenges associated with ending VAWG across countries. Speakers will include Natasha Stott Despoja, Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls; Åsa Regnér, Swedish Minister for Gender Equality; Zohra Rasekh, former CEDAW Committee Vice Chair; and Zarizana Abdul Aziz, Director at the Due Diligence Project on State Obligation to End Violence against Women. The session will be moderated by Diana Arango, Senior Gender-Based Violence and Development Specialist at the World Bank Group, and feature closing remarks from Mary Ellsberg, Director of the Global Women's Institute at the George Washington University. The Permanent Missions of Switzerland and Finland to the United Nations, in partnership with the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego, cordially invite you to a side event bringing together civil society practitioners, experts and senior officials to discuss practical means to advance a rights-based framework and more effectively support women, including young women, preventing violent extremism. The UN Security Council explicitly recognizes the link between the Women, Peace and Security agenda, as laid out in UNSCR 1325 (2000), and the role women play in preventing violent extremism as presented in the UNSCR 2242 and the Action Plan for Preventing Violent Extremism (2015). While the increased attention is encouraging, an international gendered framework founded on human rights remains elusive. The event will address the following questions: The Addis Ababa Action Agenda reaffirms that achieving gender equality, empowering all women and girls, and the full realization of their human rights are essential to achieving sustained, inclusive and equitable economic growth and sustainable development. The AAAA established the ECOSOC forum on financing for development, which will take place in New York every year, possibly in April. Seizing the momentum of the CSW is critical to ensure that gender equality and women's empowerment, as cross-cutting issues, have an established space in the yearly FfD Forum during the next years. In the frame of the Conference in Addis in July 2015, the attached Action Plan on Transformative Financing for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment was launched. The Action Plan identifies priorities and policy actions required to enforce commitments on gender equality in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. Several Member States have already signed up the Action Plan. Encouraging more Member States to join the Action Plan will contribute to closing gender gaps and achieving substantive equality for women and girls at the national level. The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an opportune time to demonstrate lessons and approaches of development practitioners that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Agenda. The event will discuss SDG 5 (focused on gender equality) and how gender equality objectives impact the achievement of other critical SDGs. Since its founding in 2004, MCC has approved over $10 billion in compact and threshold programs worldwide. A focus on gender equality and social inclusion has been an integral component of MCC¿s mission to reduce poverty through growth. The panel will feature women leaders from MCC partner countries and draw upon lessons from projects in water and sanitation, energy, infrastructure and employment promotion as a means of reducing poverty and inequality. In December 2015, the Bank Group released its new Gender Equality Strategy 2016-2023. Drawing on six months of consultations in 22 countries with donors, clients, CSOs, staff, and others, and building on the seminal 2012 World Development Report, this strategy aims to close numerous and persistent gender gaps, which ultimately hinder efforts to end poverty, boost shared prosperity, and build resilient economies able to withstand the fast-moving threats and global challenges of the 21st century. The strategy builds on four pillars: reducing maternal mortality and closing remaining health and education gaps; creating more and better jobs for women and men; closing the gender gap in ownership and control of key assets such as land, housing, technology, and finance; and enhancing women's ability to make themselves heard and direct the course of their own lives. It prioritizes data, evidence, and results. Key presentation by Caren Grown, Senior Director for Gender at the World Bank Group. Caren Grown, Senior Director for Gender at the World Bank Group, is recognized internationally as an expert on gender and development. Before joining the Bank Group in 2014, she was Economist-in-Residence and Co-Director of the Program on Gender Analysis in Economics at American University. From 2013-2014, she led the UNU-WIDER program on aid effectiveness and gender equality, and from 2011-2013 she served as Senior Gender Adviser and Acting Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment at USAID. Women's health is often discussed through the lens of contraception and abortion. Scientific research, however, points to the importance of hormonal health for both overal and reproductive health of women. Understanding their bodies and ensuring access to diagnosis and treatment, rather than simply management of symptoms, is essential to achieving informed consent and human rights for women, while also providing the highest standards of health to all women. FEMM offers personalized education, diagnosis and treatment to women. Collaborations with the Human Dignity Curriculum (HDC) allow the dissemination of recent science and health care information to communities, schools, adolescents and at risk populations, in the US and abroad. FlyerThe evidence is clear: women's meaningful participation and representation in government institutions and decision-making processes is a predictor of peace and essential to building inclusive, peaceful societies. Where women are more empowered in multiple spheres of life, countries are less likely to go to war with their neighbors, to be in violation of human rights norms, or to be rife with crime and violence within their society. To enhance women's political contributions, they must be included in deliberations on finance, security, defence, preventing violent extremism, and legal and judicial policies - all areas that have been historically dominated by male military, political and security elite. Decisions made in formal institutional structures, such as parliamentary committees, have profound impacts on society at large. The allocation of defence and security budgets is a case in point as resources invested in the traditional 'national security' sector can be diverted from human development and security. UNDP, Permanent Mission of Australia to the United Nations, The Carter Center, and the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN) are seeking to highlight the role of women parliamentarians as peace builders in their legislative, representative, and oversight roles. To meet this end, they are hosting an interactive panel discussion on March 16 at 6:30pm. This side event is an attempt to reinforce dialogue with parliamentarians/legislators and civil society, including faith based organizations, on strengthening women's leadership and effective representation in decision making on peace and security issues through a moderated discussion by looking into: - strengthen collaboration between legislators/parliamentarians with CSOs including FBOs - the challenges lawmakers face in empowering and protecting women; - enhancing the participation and leadership of women parliamentarians in key parliamentary decision making and oversight mechanisms/structures (especially those most relevant to advancing peace and security); - working with local women¿s peace building groups on CEDAW General Recommendation 30 and UN SCR 1325 to establish formal linkages between governance institutions and local level organizations to ensure more systematic gender mainstreaming across the WPS agenda. Women 20 (W20) was set up under Turkish Presidency of G20, as a stand-alone official G20 Engagement Group which focuses on the promotion of economic growth in a gender responsive and inclusive manner. The mission of W20 initiative was defined as promotion of global economic growth through the economic empowerment of women including gender equality. W20 is considered as a platform supporting and monitoring the implementation of the G20 commitments concerning women¿s full participation in economic and social life. In line with the goal of reducing the gap between the labor force participation rates of men and women by 25% until 2025, W20 assumed responsibility for developing a global roadmap and an action plan particularly for G20 countries. This panel will discuss the process of the establishment W20 initiative, share experiences about its activities and the recommendations for future.

The UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York will jointly convene a panel discussion on "Africa's Year of Human Rights with a particular focus on the Rights of Women: Opportunities & Challenges" during the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The event will take place on Thursday 17 March 2016, in Conference Room 12 from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The theme of the event is closely linked to the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's transformative Agenda 2063, as both these development agendas are grounded on the principles of human rights. Join us to discuss with the Chief of the Reykjavik Metropolitan Police, Ms. Gudjonsdottir, her innovative approach to address domestic violence named "Keep the window open". The side event is organised by the Permanent Mission of Iceland in cooperation with the Metropolitan Police and Women's NGOs. The expert panelists will focus on priorities to oppose violence in Icelandic society and its detrimental consequences. The Chief and the Chief Attorney for the Metropolitan Police will introduce new rules of procedure in the handling and recording of cases of domestic violence that are in accordance with the Restraining and Exclusion Orders Act, based on the Austrian Model. By enhancing co-operation as well as changing working methods and attitudes, the multi-disciplinary project aims at improving the first response of the police and the quality of investigation, prevent repeated offences and use the available legal resources to provide better support for victims and offenders. The panel also includes Thordis Elva, a well known author and Women's Rights activist. Leaving Africa is an emotional film that depicts the empowerment of women and its impact on individuals, communities and global development. Finnish Riitta and Ugandan Catherine share a home and wonderfully straightforward sense of humor. Together they host sexual health and gender equality workshops in which they challenge religious leaders to a straightforward taboo breaking discussion on women's rights to their bodies, sexuality and life. Leaving Africa is a moving portrait of Riitta's and Kata's friendship as they work together towards gender equality. Leaving Africa directed by Iiris Härmä won the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award in New York in October 2015. The screening of the documentary will be followed by Q & A with the director.
