UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet opens symposium on gender justice

Opening a symposium via video message on using international prosecutions to strengthen gender justice that is co-hosted by UN Women and Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice, Executive Director Michelle Bachelet underlined the role of international courts in delivering justice where others are either unwilling or unable.

Their investigations and prosecutions send the important message to the most vulnerable that the international community will not turn a blind eye.

Ms. Bachelet called on participants - who included the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, as well as her counterparts at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Serge Brammertz; the Special Court for Sierra Leone, Brenda J. Hollis; and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Hassan Jallow — to identify the key future actions to secure meaningful and comprehensive justice for women.
