Statement on UNFPA by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women

Date:

I join the UN Secretary-General in his deep regret for the decision by the United States to cut financial aid for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and his wish that the life-saving work of UNFPA can be appropriately supported to allow it to continue its critical work.

In our work globally to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women, UN Women has witnessed UNFPA’s life-saving efforts to protect the health of women and girls and their families. This is work that must go on in order to support the achievement of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
