(English) The European Union and UN Women have signed an agreement establishing a joint fund to support projects from civil society organizations that promote gender equality in Chile. These projects will focus on three strategic areas: eliminating violence against women, women’s economic empowerment and promoting women’s political participation and leadership.
(English) As the International Labour Organization Convention 189 on domestic work turns two, a look at how Governments, unions and the private sector supported by UN Women are working towards ensuring that this female-dominated profession is regulated and worker’s rights are protected.
(English) Uruguay was the first country to ratify International Labour Organization Convention 189 on domestic workers’ rights, adopted two years back on 16 June 2011, in Geneva. A Uruguayan union leader looks back on that achievement, its impact and what remains to be done.
(English) Joining forces with UN-Habitat to promote women’s voice, access and safety in sustainable urban development
(English) As part of a new series highlighting UN Women partnerships with other UN entities, a look into our work with UN-Habitat to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in urban planning and sustainable development.
(English) As pledged under the COMMIT initiative, the European Union has adopted an EU-wide protection order, to recognize protection and restraining orders issued against perpetrators of violence across all EU Member States.
(English) In a speech as part of a lecture series by the Liechtenstein Center for Self-Determination, Princeton University, Acting Head of UN Women and UN Assistant Secretary-General Lakshmi Puri stressed that women’s empowerment is key to preventing violations of their rights.
(English) Using cell phones and Internet cafés in 10 favelas of Rio de Janeiro, women and girls are accessing information about the services of a network for tackling violence – whether psychological, economic, physical or sexual – and training their peers.
(English) On World Environment Day, a tribute to six mothers and grandmothers from three remote villages in southern Tanzania who are bringing renewable energy to their communities, serving as role models, and increasing women’s safety and voice in local development.
