UN Women Grants in Rural Kyrgyzstan

UN Women has provided several grants to communities in Kyrgyzstan designed to enhance the economic security of rural women. This photo gallery highlights a few of the ways the grants are helping communities. Projects include a milk collection station that allows local farmers to earn more by selling to larger distributors; machinery that enables farmers to grind and clean grain locally, producing more with less strain; the expansion of a bakery that provides better nutrition for school children and jobs for women; the refurbishing of a kindergarten; equipment for an Aged Person’s Center giving care, food and society to at-risk elderly; and workshop equipment for a handicrafts centre that employs women from low-income families.

Empowering Women Farmers in Rwanda

In 2010 UN Women and district authorities co-hosted training workshops on gender equality and agricultural services for leaders of farm cooperatives in Rwanda. The training encouraged leaders to think about the needs of women farmers, expand membership to include more women members, increase women’s representation in their decision making structures, and to prioritize opportunities to the most vulnerable women members. This gallery visits the Cocamu Coffee Cooperative and the Ibyiza Birimbere farmer’s cooperative in 2011 to see the impact of the new practices.
