This series of documents is a compilation of all the different provisions on gender contained in constitutions across the world, in their original language and with English translations, organised by geographical region.
They include all provisions on equality; non-discrimination; rights of women; public authorities, institutions and services; political participation and freedom of association; citizenship and nationality; education; employment; equal before the law; marriage and family life; status of religious/customary law; status of international law (including human rights law); limitations and derogations; general human rights duties; right to property/inheritance and reproductive rights contained in all the constitutions across the world.
It should be noted that these documents consolidate all existing provisions that relate to gender equality in constitutions worldwide. They are complete mappings that include some provisions that are strong on ensuring gender equality, some that are weak (e.g., equality and non-discrimination guarantees that do not mention gender or sex).
Some provisions are more clearly in compliance with CEDAW than others. The documents provide a comprehensive picture of the current status of gender equality provisions, allowing users to note the wealth of formulations and variety in their design.
These documents are intended as a resource for those working on constitutional reform, as well as students, academics, advocates and those looking for comparative perspectives on gender equality provisions.
