This guidance note provides an overview of issues related to gender equality, women’s empowerment and sustainable energy and provides guidance for UN programming and work with policy makers around sustainable energy that integrates the gender dimensions.
This inter-agency study is a call to action based an overview of existing evidence from Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America. It highlights that the forms and nature of violence that women and girls experience are shaped and influenced by the often multiple forms of discrimination they face. They can be based on factors such as age, ethnicity, geographic location, or disability, and intersect with gender inequality and discrimination.
This report, supported by 13 UN agencies, calls for a transformation to integrated policy making, where social equity, economic growth and environmental protection are approached together. It is a contribution of governments, experts, researchers and development practitioners ahead of the ‘Rio+20' UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
