Every day in developing countries, 20,000 girls below age 18 give birth. Nine in 10 of these births occur within marriage or a union. This has consequences on the health, education, employment and rights of an untold millions of girls. What are the challenges of adolescent pregnancy, and what can we do to ensure girls have a healthy and safe transition into adulthood?

The report reviews outcomes of major events during the past year and assesses the extent to which the reports of the Secretary-General and the resolutions of the Assembly have taken into account gender perspectives and made specific recommendations for action, in particular in relation to follow-up to major summits and conferences, including the United Nations Millennium Summit. The report also assesses gender perspectives in the preparations for the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society, which is to be held in Tunis in November 2005.

The present report, submitted in response to Commission on the Status of Women resolution 48/4 and General Assembly resolution 59/168, outlines achievements and good practices in United Nations entities in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly.

The present report is prepared in response to General Assembly resolution 57/270 B, in which the Assembly requested each functional commission to examine its methods of work in order to better pursue the implementation of the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits. The report reviews the methods of work of the Commission on the Status of Women, particularly to enhance the implementation and follow-up of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome document of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly, as well as to contribute to the implementation and follow-up of other major United Nations conferences and summits in the economic and social fields.

Documents pertaining to the sessional meetings of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). ECOSOC coordinates the work of the 14 UN specialized agencies, 10 functional commissions, including the Commission on the Status of Women, and five regional commissions; receives reports from 11 UN funds and programmes, and issues policy recommendations to the UN system and to Member States. ECOSOC also monitors follow up to the major world conferences on women.
