At a high level event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, UN Women, the UN Development Programme, UNHCR, and the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights called for reform of nationality laws that discriminate on the basis of gender. Twenty-five countries retain nationality laws that deny women the right to confer citizenship on their children on an equal basis with men. Mimoza Dhembi has been the General Director of Budget at the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Albania since 2000 and is one of the pioneers of the Public Financial Management reform in Albania. She has been crucial in establishing a successful collaboration with UN Women in mainstreaming gender through the introduction of gender-responsive budgeting in the Medium-Term Budget Program. Going to the Shari'a court every day to file cases on behalf of survivors of violence has been her morning routine since 2015. In November 2015, she was selected as one of the four female lawyers for a training with the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, supported by the UN Women/UNDP joint programme, to defend women's rights at the Shari'a court.

Patricia Munabi is the Executive Director of Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE), a women’s rights organization in Uganda. From 2010 - 2012, FOWODE was supported by UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality to implement gender-responsive budgeting at a local and national level in Uganda. This involved training women in 16 local communities to form Village Budget Clubs to ensure that women are actively involved in budget allocation and decisions at the local level. Some 200 legislators and government officials were also trained to implement gender-responsive programmes at the national level.
