In focus: Generation Equality Midpoint
On the 17th of September, UN Women together with the governments of Iceland and Tanzania, marked the midpoint moment for Generation Equality to bolster its agenda for gender equality acceleration at a critical time for women’s rights.
Generation Equality is the world’s leading initiative to boost investment and implementation of gender equality. It brings together organizations from all corners of society to catalyze progress, push for change and take bold actions together.
Launched in 2021 at the Generation Equality Forum hosted in Mexico City and Paris, the Forum set in motion a five-year agenda under a Global Acceleration Plan for gender equality that defines the most critical actions needed to accelerate progress.
The Forum also launched six Action Coalitions and a Global Compact on Women, Peace, Security and Humanitarian Action, each of which is spear-heading a critical part of the Generation Equality agenda.
At the Paris Forum, trailblazing stakeholders made over 1,000 policy, program and financial commitments, representing an unprecedented aggregate value of $40 billion.

More than $47 billion pledged, $20B secured and $9.5B invested in gender equality
As Generation Equality reaches its midpoint, we call on all stakeholders to join us to mobilize more investment in gender equality as an accelerator for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a time when women’s rights are under increased threats globally and progress has stalled and reversed in more than 30 percent of SDGs.
The midpoint moment spotlighted:
-
Progress and accountability by sharing transformative results and practices for SDGs acceleration.
-
High impact initiatives to highlight commitments and results of the six action coalitions and the Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action Compact.
-
Enhanced commitments for gender equality to reinforce and expand existing commitments and new high-impact and high-value commitments.
-
Amplification and energization of gender equality to accelerate gender-responsive sustainable development globally.

The Midpoint Moment for Generation Equality
On September 17 2023, the Midpoint Moment for Generation Equality brought together Heads of State along with leaders from the UN System, private sector, philanthropy, civil society and youth-led organizations to commit to the urgent, coordinated efforts needed to bridge gaps and accelerate progress for gender equality.
Aligned with the SDG Summit High Impact Initiatives, the Midpoint Event called for action and urged leaders to contribute to the UN Secretary-General’s vision for the future of global cooperation – setting the stage for a world where gender equality is a lived reality, and every SDG target stands within reach.
