At the Rio+20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, UN Women Executive director Michelle Bachelet called for robust policies and strong commitments that fully reflect women's central role in sustainable development and bring real change in people's lives and highlighted that gender equality is fundamental to a sustainable future.

In 2010 UN Women and district authorities co-hosted training workshops on gender equality and agricultural services for leaders of farm cooperatives in Rwanda. The training encouraged leaders to think about the needs of women farmers, to expand membership to include more women members, to increase women's representation in their decision making structures and to prioritize opportunities to the most vulnerable women members. read more »

This photo slideshow takes you on a journey of a woman from Kyrgyzstan's Kemin district, who milks cows for a living. Before UN Women provided a grant to open a milk collection point in her district, she earned between 11 to 15 US cents per liter of milk. Today she earns 29 US cents per liter, boosting her family's income and food security. read more »

Colombia: Wayuu Gold, Fighting for Access to Fresh Water

In some parts of the world it's as rare as gold — and getting a hold of some, nearly impossible. To one of Colombia's largest indigenous groups indigenous groups, Wayuu, that gold is fresh water. Soon their water will be siphoned from Wayuu lands through new pipes to a nearby town, where the population is not indigenous. As struggles for ethnic rights, such as access to water, are recreated across the country, the community deals with an additional strain on their resources — climate change.

Safe and Friendly Cities for All

UN Women, UNICEF, and UN-HABITAT have launched a five-year programme, “Safe and Friendly Cities for All, that aims at making women and children feel safer in their local neighbourhoods, while improving their quality of life. The new partnership will address these challenges by supporting a variety of initiatives in the participating cities.
