At the Rio+20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet called for robust policies and strong commitments that fully reflect women's central role in sustainable development and bring real change in people's lives. Highlighting that gender equality is fundamental to a sustainable future, UN Women events during the Conference reflected women's voices and showcased innovative strategies that are making a difference in communities across the world.

Women Leaders Forum Programme

The Women Leaders' Forum was UN Women's climactic event for the Rio+20 Conference organized in collaboration with the Government of Brazil and other partners. The panel event featured government leaders, UN heads of agencies, grass roots activists, and private sector representatives, with the aim to highlight strategies and programmes that foster gender equality and sustainable development. Topics discussed at the forum included: Advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in green economies; normative frameworks and the Integration of the three pillars of sustainable development; and shaping the new international development framework.

A special event showcased women's innovations aimed at empowering women and promoting the goals of sustainable development. It also featured the first-ever winner of the SEED Gender Equality Award.

People from around the world were invited to participate and ask their question to the panelists via the hashtag #WomenRio on Twitter.

The Women Leaders' High Level Summit gathered women Heads of State and Governments and was held as a follow up session of the Women's Leaders Forum. At the summit, Women Heads of State and Governments pledged their support and urged governments, civil society and the private sector to prioritize gender equality and women's empowerment in the sustainable development agenda and accelerate actions for its implementation.
