International Day of Older Persons

Date:

Celebrated every year on the 1st of October, the International Day of Older Persons celebrates the contributions of older people who too often go neglected and are marginalized as they grow older in years.

UN Women with its partners supports the rights of women and girls worldwide, and amongst them is one of the most vulnerable groups, older women, sometime subject to elder abuse.

UN Women is supporting a programme to empower older marginalized women, most of them grandmothers, by teaching them how to use solar power to light their rural villages through a six month training programme in India. These women are role models, bringing change in a village from within and from its very roots: through the wisdom and determination of grandmothers. These women in turn are teaching the young, and proving their value within the community.
