Condolences on the death of Ameera BinKaram

UN Women mourns the tragic loss of Ms. Ameera BinKaram, together with her mother and sister, in an accidental fire at her home yesterday, 22 October.
As Deputy Chairperson of the NAMA Women Advancement Establishment, Chairperson of the Sharjah Women´s Business Council and a founding member and President of Friends of Cancer Patients society, United Arab Emirates, she was a leading light in the region.
Ms. BinKaram was a passionate advocate for the realization of women’s economic rights and a champion of women and girls. Her vision was one of women’s vibrant engagement in entrepreneurship, including robotics and ICT. On Wednesday she had graciously led the Gala Dinner at the ‘Investing in the Future’ (IIFMENA) conference ahead of business meetings with UN Women on Thursday.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Ameera BinKaram,” stated Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. “Ameera was a powerful and inspirational role model for young women growing up in the Arab world today, demonstrating humanitarian and business leadership. She was a highly respected representative of the NAMA Women Advancement Establishment. My staff in New York and across the region join me in conveying our deepest sympathies and condolences to Ameera’s family at this time.”
