UN Women Executive Director to visit Norway for annual consultations

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will visit Oslo, Norway from 22 –23 May, for the annual consultations, which provide the opportunity to discuss the status of gender equality in Norway, as well as Norway’s contribution to achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide—a top priority that Norway and UN Women share.

The Executive Director is expected to meet a number of representatives from the Government of Norway and civil society to explore measures to increase women’s participation in peace processes, and to ensure that their rights, needs and priorities are addressed in all peace and security efforts. Other issues on the agenda include strategies on elimination all forms of violence against women and girls, and ensuring appropriate funding for UN Women and civil society organizations working on achieving these goals around the world.

The visit will be an opportunity to learn more about Norway’s recently adopted “Freedom, Empowerment and Opportunities” and “The Right to Decide Over One’s Own Life” Action Plans, which support gender-responsive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Beijing Platform for Action.

In Oslo, Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka will participate in a public dialogue with State Secretary Laila Bokhari and Gro Lindstad, Director of FOKUS, the Norwegian National Committee for UN Women. The event, moderated by Mr. Tor-Hugne Olsen, Director of Sex and Politics, the association for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Norway, will present a dynamic discussion with Norwegian politicians and women’s rights activists.
