The summit aims to translate the commitment of governments, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders into action on the ground that eliminates these harmful practices.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka started her first official visit to Senegal on 23 July. In her meetings with the President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, and key government representatives, civil society partners and international development actors, the Executive Director stressed upon accelerating women’s access to resources, skills and the formal employment sector, as well as their right to equal participation in decision-making.

Ms. Niang is one of 213 women with disabilities who have benefited from the Gender Equitable Local Development programme implemented by UN Women in 58 local councils in Senegal, with financial support from Luxembourg. Through workshops and information sessions, women with disabilities have been sensitized and trained on Senegal’s landmark social orientation law, adopted in 2010, and on addressing the unique and specific needs of disabled women in menstrual hygiene management.

Michaëlle Jean, former Governor General of Canada, was selected by consensus as the new Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF) at its 15th Summit, held in Dakar, Senegal from 29-30 November. She will be the first woman to lead the organization of French-speaking nations, which includes 57 members or associates and another 20 observers. Ms. Jean, who is also of Haitian origin, will take over from outgoing Secretary General Abdou Diouf, of Senegal, in January 2015.
