From Tanzania to Algeria, rural women are taking charge of their lives and livelihoods

A recently organized learning visit brought two rural women’s collectives together to share strategies, insights and experiences. In the world of international development, such exchanges are termed “South–South cooperation”—exchange of ideas, experiences, and opportunities between entrepreneurs, communities, and experts from the Global South. “It enabled both organizations to monitor and analyse the impact of their projects on the quality of lives of women in Tanzania and Algeria, consulting each other on alternatives and progress in their livelihoods systems and value chains.”

Nesrine Charikhi is a radio reporter from Algiers, the capital of Algeria. In 2017, she took part in a training on gender-sensitive reporting for journalists organized by UN Women in partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Communication. One year later, Charikhi explains how the training has helped her change her way of reporting on violence against women and girls, especially through her radio show, “At the Heart of Society”.

In remote and rural Algerian communities, poverty among women is high. For vulnerable groups, such as widows, it’s even higher. A project funded by UN Women Fund for Gender Equality has revealed the unique challenges faced by women in these areas and given them the means to earn incomes, take charge of their own lives and inspire other women in their communities.

For International Women’s Day this year, UN Women reached out to the region’s youth to virtually shift roles and see the world from each other’s eyes to challenge stereotypes. A social experiment video engaged 20 young men and women from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Syria. They were asked to switch roles and answer questions as they think the other gender would.

For what promises to be one of UN Women's most challenging and transcendent years yet, Member States of the UN Women Executive Board opened the year by electing five representatives to its Bureau in elections on 7 January. The Western European Group has the Presidency of the Executive Board this year and Ambassador Ib Petersen, Permanent Representative of Denmark to the UN, was elected as President for 2015.

Sharing their own experiences of conflict and recovery at the High-Level Conference on Women’s Leadership in the Sahel region held on 9 April, women from across the region called for greater participation in all international forums and recovery efforts to resolve the crises, as well as more funds to advance women’s rights and empowerment.
