Monitoring Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challenges

On 2 August 2015, the outcome document of the United NationsSustainable Development Summit 2015 was agreed by consensusby Member States. The outcome document will be presentedto the Summit for adoption in September 2015. From a genderperspective, the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)and targets address many concerns and therefore represent asignificant step forward compared to the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs). As a result of a wide-ranging consultation processwith United Nations Member States, civil society and internationalorganizations, this position paper sets out UN Women’ssuggestions for global indicators to effectively monitor how theSDGs are being implemented for women and girls.
