Inputs for the Report on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Peace and Security: Submission from UN Women to the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity

This UN Women submission was prepared in response to a call for inputs from the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, for his Report on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Peace and Security.

UN Women’s submission focuses on:

  1. The overall relationship between sexual orientation and gender identity and peace and security, and links to the women, peace and security agenda;
  2. Concrete examples of the types of conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence experienced by people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC);
  3. Information on gender persecution, including persecution of people on the basis of their SOGIESC, as a crime under international law and potential pathway to redress; and
  4. An example from UN Women’s work in support of people of diverse SOGIESC in Colombia.
