#MeToo: Headlines from a global movement
Authors/editor(s): Purna Sen, Executive Coordinator and Spokesperson on Addressing Sexual Harassment and Other Forms of Discrimination at UN Women
This brief presents headlines of UN Women’s analysis of Twitter data on the use of the hashtag #MeToo in different countries between 2017 and 2019. The analysis provides global data on engagement with the movement on Twitter by region; a list of some regional or language-specific hashtags by country; and a list of most commonly used terms alongside the #MeToo hashtag. Conclusions are drawn on the ways in which social media contributed to the movement by allowing people to express their thoughts and ideas concerning sexual harassment.
Research was conducted in cooperation with UN Global Pulse, the Secretary-General’s initiative on big data and artificial intelligence for development, humanitarian action and peace.
