Discriminatory social norms and stereotypes present a major barrier to the achievement of gender equality. UN Women works to reduce gender discrimination and transform sexist attitudes by promoting positive social norms around gender and gender roles. Working within sectors such as education, media and security, we collaborate on programming and campaigns that challenge the root causes of gender-based discrimination.

Community programming

Partnering with educational institutions and community organizations, UN Women engages with young people, community actors, and local leaders on issues surrounding gender equality, including promoting equitable relationships, preventing violence against women and sharing responsibility for care work.

Challenging stereotypes

UN Women engages with the media, advertising and sports industries, and public influencers to challenge negative stereotypes and promote positive social norms through initiatives like the Unstereotype Alliance and high-profile campaigns such as HeForShe.

Monitoring progress

UN Women supports partners in monitoring social norms, attitudes and beliefs around gender. This includes supporting data collection initiatives focused on such norms, as well as building capacity to address sexist and discriminatory behavior.
