Much remains to be done to turn the promises of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into a lived reality for all women and girls. A new global report, “Turning promises into action: Gender equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, comprehensively tracks where the world stands right now on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

One thing is clear: Meeting the 2030 deadline depends on rapid progress for rural women and girls. They have been systematically left behind on all dimensions of sustainable development, social, economic and environmental, even as they have vital roles in each of these.

Rural women will determine chances to meet agricultural productivity and nutrition targets, for example. As the primary household energy managers, they could lead the way to sustainable energy. Where they have decisive roles in managing natural resources, outcomes improve, such as through better preservation of forests.

The promises have been made. Now it is time for action. Every rural women and girl should enjoy her equal rights and opportunities for improved well-being.

What can we do to move forward? This exhibit showcases a few of the findings from the report, along with some ideas to galvanize change.
