The European Union, the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Sahel and UN Women will be convening a Conference on Women’s Leadership in the Sahel, on 9 April, in Brussels.

Some 40 women from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, as well as representatives from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet to discuss their experiences and their role in economic recovery, political stability and conflict prevention in the Sahel. They will present recommendations on ways to enhance women’s leadership to Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission; Romano Prodi, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Sahel; and Lakshmi Puri, Acting Head of UN Women.

The media is invited to the following press opportunities:

1) Opening of the high-level segment of the conference from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Charlemagne building. Remarks by Ms. Ashton, Mr. Prodi and Ms. Puri.
