UN Women Executive Director meets with President of Finland and key partners

On the first day of a two-day mission to Finland, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka met with the President of the Republic, Sauli Niinistö, at the Presidential Palace on 20 May. They discussed Gender Equality in Finland and the HeForShe initiative.

President Niinistö is a UN Women HeForShe Impact Champion, a group which consists of some 30 influential Heads of State and Government as well as corporate and university leaders who are committed to promoting gender equality and strengthening women's rights and opportunities.

Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka is in Finland as a guest of Lenita Toivakka, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development. During her two-day visit, aimed at strengthening partnerships and discussing gender equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Executive Director will also meet with Finnish private sector and civil society representatives and visit the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.

Advancing women's and girls' rights and status is one of the four priorities of Finland's development policy. Finland has been a strong supporter of UN Women since its creation in 2010-11.
