COP 14

The fourteenth session of the Conference of Parties (COP 14) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from 17 to 29 November 2018.

At COP 14, UN Women worked closely with Parties and civil society partners to advocate for the integration of a gender perspective into the decisions being discussed. Particular attention was placed on the decision pertaining to the two-year process to develop the “post-2020 global biodiversity framework”, which will succeed the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020.

UN Women participated as an Observer to the CBD, made interventions and provided technical support during negotiations. The Entity also offered general observations to draw attention to CBD workstreams where gender equality considerations could be enhanced, such as in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

UN Women strengthened partnerships with Parties and with civil society organizations for ongoing work on gender equality and the empowerment of women within the CBD processes, and increased knowledge about the linkages between biodiversity and gender equality through co-organizing side events during COP 14.
