NGO participation

The active participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is a critical element in the work of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). NGOs have been influential in shaping the current global policy framework on women’s empowerment and gender equality: the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. They continue to play an important role in holding international and national leaders accountable for the commitments they made in the Platform for Action.

UN Women facilitates the participation of ECOSOC accredited NGOs in the sessions of the CSW. NGOs that are accredited to and in good standing with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) may designate representatives to the annual sessions of the CSW.

Specific to CSW65:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women is scheduled to take place virtually/online (including the general discussion, ministerial round tables and interactive events), with the exception of two in-person meetings (opening and closing) that will take place with the participation of New York-based delegates. This format takes into account the constraints and opportunities as they might present themselves in the changing and evolving environment of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related safety and health guidelines implemented at the United Nations Headquarters. There is no expectation of travel to UNHQ in New York. All side events and parallel events will take place fully virtually.

As in previous sessions, a limited number of registered representatives from non-governmental organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC will be able to speak during the general discussion and to make oral interventions during the interactive dialogues, subject to time availability. Due to the virtual manner of the session, these contributions will be through virtual modalities. All registered representatives will be able to follow the proceedings of the session via live webcast which will provide interpretation in official UN languages.

NGO CSW65 Forum and virtual NGO CSW networking platform

The NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW/NY) is a group of New York-based women’s NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC that arrange and facilitate hundreds of NGO-hosted parallel events. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all NGO parallel events will take place virtually on an online civil society networking platform managed by NGO CSW. Participation in the virtual NGO CSW platform and at NGO parallel events do not require ECOSOC status or registration to the official CSW.
