“A promise is A Promise is the theme of the Official Commemoration of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women organized by the United Nations Secretary-General's campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women. It is a call from the United Nations to Governments and leaders to translate international promises into concrete national action.
Why: Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. In some countries, up to 7 in 10 women will be beaten, raped, abused or mutilated in their lifetimes.
International and regional legal instruments have outlined the obligations of States to prevent, eradicate and punish violence against women and girls. However, the continued prevalence of violence against women and girls demonstrates that this gross human rights violation is yet to be tackled with all the necessary political commitment, action and resources.
