OCTOBER

Thursday, 17 October

8:45 – 9:45 a.m. - Breakfast Briefing: UN Women and UNDP initiatives on Women´s Access to Justice in Crisis and Post-Conflict Contexts: Over the past decade, the Security Council has increasingly focused on rule of law and transitional justice. The Council has recognized that without significant investment in rebuilding the rule of law, in the immediate post-conflict stages, cycles of violence underpinned by impunity may continue. In advance of the annual Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, focusing this year on ‘Women, Rule of Law and Transitional Justice’, this breakfast gives an opportunity to learn about UN Women’s and UNDP’s initiatives on Women´s Access to Justice. The meeting presents an occasion to introduce UN Women’s mapping report “Improving Women’s Access to Justice During and After Conflict: Mapping UN Rule of Law Engagement”, which was developed with the support of UNDP. The report makes a number of key recommendations to strengthen the UN’s approach to women’s access to justice in post-conflict situations. Furthermore, and building on the findings of the report, another joint initiative between UN Women and UNDP, ‘Strengthening Women’s Access to Justice in Conflict-affected and Fragile States’, will also be introduced.
