COP 14

The fourteenth session of the Conference of Parties (COP 14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was held from 2 to 13 September 2019 in New Delhi, India. UN Women, together with the UNCCD Secretariat and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, launched a “Manual for gender-responsive land degradation neutrality transformative projects and programmes”, building on ongoing work to integrate gender perspectives in areas such as land degradation neutrality and drought.

CRIC 17

Ahead of COP 14, UN Women participated in the seventeenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) of the UNCCD, held from 28 to 30 January 2019 in Georgetown, Guyana. UN Women aimed to enhance knowledge of Parties and stakeholders of the interlinkages between gender equality and women’s empowerment and land degradation neutrality (LDN), and opportunities for a better integration of gender perspectives in national reporting and LDN target setting.

UN Women co-organized a training fair on gender equality, which strengthened capacity of participating Parties to reflect gender issues in the work of the Convention. The training fair, as well as UN Women’s other activities, interventions and partnership building, contributed to the reflection of key gender equality considerations in the conclusions and recommendations of the CRIC, including in LDN target-setting, finance, reporting templates, development of data, and indicators, among others. It also contributed to the subsequent strengthened integration of gender considerations in the decisions adopted at COP 14.
