The African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, during the 23rd Ordinary Session, held in June 2014 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, declared 2015 as the Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063. The Summit will mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), the 5th anniversary of the African Women’s Decade (2010-2020) and the 15th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325. Coinciding with the finalization of the post-2015 agenda, the Africa Year of Women provides a unique opportunity for governments to recommit to gender equality and women’s empowerment and move from policies to implementation.
