On 29 September, UN Women Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri met with Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission Representative Dr. Tamader Al-Rammah, to discuss issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Ms. Puri cited the 2030 Agenda and the gender compact committed to last year by the international community as the basis of global mobilization and engagement. “Women are central and critical actors in all areas of work and in all processes,” she said, and encouraged Saudi Arabia to become a constructive and affirmative actor to fulfill the Sustainable Development Agenda.

Dr. Al-Rammah stressed that “while there is still a long way to go, one area of work that Saudi has been paying a lot of attention is the inclusion of women in various bodies, including the Shura Council (the Parliament), on the municipal level and in the Human Rights Commission.” She added that the King this year appointed six women to the Human Rights Commission in Riyadh. "Finally, the fight for women's issues can now be fought by women themselves."
