Media advisory: launch of UN Women’s Feminist Plan for Sustainability and Social Justice

Date:

What: UN Women is launching a new flagship report, “Beyond COVID-19: A Feminist Plan for Sustainability and Social Justice”, which calls for governments to ensure the COVID-19 recovery shapes a more gender equal and sustainable world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to three urgent crises – on jobs, care and the environment – that undermine gender equality and threaten the survival of people and planet.

The need for a plan to recover and transform economies has never been clearer. Drawing on the latest available data and the contributions of more than 100 global experts, The Plan provides a vision and calls for action in three key areas:

  • An economy that supports women’s livelihoods. The vulnerability of women’s jobs has been brutally revealed during the pandemic. Urgent action is needed to strengthen social protection systems and move women out of the informal economy.
  • Putting care at the centre of a sustainable and just economy. The world has recognized care work as ‘essential’ in this crisis. Now is the moment to back that recognition with policies to properly support and reward that work.
  • Gender-just transitions for a green future. New green jobs for women, and investments in sustainable energy and agriculture will be critical to set economies on more equitable and sustainable paths.

When: Thursday 16 September, 9.00 – 10.30 a.m. EDT

Where: The virtual event will be held on Zoom and will be accompanied by translation (English, Spanish, French) and closed captioning. Please register at https://bit.ly/3tokyW4.

  • Martín Guzmán, Minister of the Economy, Argentina
  • Stella Funsani Gama, Advisor, Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources and UNFCCC negotiator, Malawi.
  • Åsa Regnér, Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director, UN Women
  • Gita Sen, Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) and Public Health Foundation of India, Member of Expert Advisory Group for the Feminist Plan
  • Hakima Abbas, Co-Executive Director, AWID

Background: As the world learns to live with COVID-19 and starts to emerge from the crisis, there is an unmissable opportunity to ensure the “new normal” does not perpetuate the injustices and the inequalities of the past.

UN Women’s Feminist Plan for Sustainability and Social Justice is the only global roadmap with concrete solutions to address the major gendered crises of our time that have been brought to the fore by COVID-19: on livelihoods, care, and the environment. Transformative macroeconomic policies and a new feminist politics will be needed to implement the Plan, which spells out the financing, partnerships, accountability and metrics needed to ensure gender equality, sustainability and social justice for all.

An expert group pulling together more than 100 thought leaders from research, policy and civil society, from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and regions have supported the development of the Feminist Plan.

The Plan builds on last year’s Insights to Action’ report on the impacts of COVID-19 from the gender perspective, and on the UN Women/UNDP Global COVID-19 Gender Response Tracker. It will provide analysis and insights that can inform and bolster the Action Coalitions, especially those focused on Economic Justice and Rights, Climate Justice, and Feminist Movements and Leadership.
