UN Women launches comic competition on gender equality

Date:

On World Day of Social Justice, UN Women together with the European Commission, Belgian Development Cooperation and UNRIC, are launching a Comic and Cartoon Competition on Gender Equality. The competition is part of the UN Women Beijing+20 campaign “Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the historic Fourth World Conference on Women that took place in Beijing in 1995.

Adopted by 189 countries at the Conference, the Beijing Platform for Action –considered the most comprehensive blueprint for advancing women’s rights– calls on governments to ensure equality and non-discrimination under the law and in practice. Twenty years on, the Beijing promise is only partially fulfilled, and social justice is inaccessible to too many women. The 20th anniversary of Beijing opens new opportunities to galvanize political will, reconnect and mobilize the public.

The comic competition calls on young people in the European Union to depict the messages of the 12 Critical Areas of Concern of the Beijing Platform, inviting them to use their creativity to reflect on women’s rights and empowerment and on the relationship between women and men.

Comic and cartoon artists and art students, aged 18- to 28-years-old, who are residents of an EU Member State, are invited to join the competition with their drawings. Among the submissions, five finalists will be recognized. Finalists will be invited to a Competition Awards Ceremony in Brussels in summer 2015.

The submission deadline for the competition is 20 April 2015.
