Statement by UN Women on the release of Homa Hoodfar from Iranian prison

Date:

UN Women welcomes the release on 26 September 2016 of the Canadian-Iranian academic Homa Hoodfar from prison in Iran, where she had been detained since 6th June 2015.

While we celebrate her return to freedom, we remain deeply concerned that across the world, women’s rights advocates, feminist intellectuals and women human rights defenders continue to face incarceration and resistance in their effort to advance the cause of gender equality and women’s rights.

We call upon governments to act swiftly to release all women human rights defenders and gender equality advocates who remain imprisoned; and we urge Member States and civil society to work together to expand and strengthen democratic action and space.
