Media advisory: United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Music for Life International pay tribute to the resilience of women

WHAT: A benefit concert of the great Scheherazade-inspired works of Rimsky-Korsakov and Maurice Ravel celebrating the resilience of women and girls in the face of violence, a partnership between the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Music for Life International.

WHEN: Monday, 19 October 2015, 8 p.m.

WHERE: Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

Background: The benefit concert at Carnegie Hall is the culmination of a series of events in Washington D.C., New Delhi and New York marking the grand finale of the Scheherazade Initiative, a musical concert project which brings together global leaders in the artistic, musical and diplomatic communities to raise funds and public awareness of violence against women and girls, globally. In more than 75 countries and territories, UN Trust Fund grantees are ensuring access to justice for survivors of violence in conflict situations, they are engaging men and boys as strategic allies, and are empowering women subjected to multiple forms of discrimination with the resources and skills to rebuild their lives.

Principal musicians from 40 of the world’s great orchestras and ensembles as well as 18 academies and universities such as the MET Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic and Orchestra of St. Luke's will perform at Carnegie Hall donating their artistry to end violence against women.

Performers will include:

  • Elmira Darvarova, Concertmaster & Solo Violin, the first female Concertmaster in the history of the MET Opera Orchestra;
  • George Mathew, Artistic Director & Conductor;
  • Robert Langevin, Principal Flute, New York Philharmonic;
  • Susanne Mentzer, Mezzo-Soprano;
  • Sarah Kay, Spoken Word Poet.

The net proceeds will benefit the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, which is managed by UN Women on behalf of the United Nations system.
